Do you have some spare time? A bank holiday weekend perhaps? Why not use it to clear out the loft? You will not only gain space, but peace of mind as well. It will definitely be an effort but we can promise you that it’s worth the result. Remember that the more prepared you are, the easier and more rewarding your loft clearance would be. This is why we are here – to give you some helpful tips and make the experience less stressful.

  • Be ready for dust

It is best for you to be dressed appropriately for the battle with dust. You can be sure that shifting forgotten boxes, pieces of furniture and old loft insulation comes with dredging up enormous levels of dust, mould and fluff. We suggest that you wear a mask, which is available at the nearby hardware store. You may think that you are a little overdressed, but your lungs will be thankful. Good additions to that uniform are gloves and goggles.

  • Be prepared for dead stuff

There will be some animals for sure (dead more often than not). Look out for bees, wasps, moths, spiders, birds, bats, mice, etc. You should also be careful and look out for active wasp nests. They don’t require much provocation. We recommend using the services of pest control for such cases. Remember that when we say dead stuff we do not mean the forgotten vintage taxidermy – this would be a treasure that can be sold for a good price.

  • Forget about useless and forgotten collectionsessential tips for clearing your loft

All the stuff that you used to ‘collect’ is probably useless now. You have passed that time in your life and if you truly want to open up space – get rid of this kind of stuff. People tend to accumulate stuff for various reasons, but there comes a time when we have to ask ourselves if we need certain items. Do that and sort out the things that you actually find useful. Throw away/sell/donate everything else. Remember that if you needed it that much, it would not be in the loft.

  • Don’t be too attached

It’s not that easy to part with things that you’re attached to. Clarify your judgment by asking yourself: Do I use it? If the answer is ‘no’ then it has to go. Gather all those items, call a rubbish removal company and let them take these old items away. Don’t worry that the good memories will go along with them – they will not.

  • Determine the size of the job

Does the job require a dozen bin bags, or would a skip be in order? A good idea is to ask a neighbour if they would share one with you. This way you spend less and you double the fun. Clarify how much stuff needs to be cleared and then make the decision. Another thing to consider is hiring a rubbish clearance company to help you with all this dreadful work. They usually offer part or full waste collection and will make things much easier for you.

P.S. HAVE FUN!
